A few days after the official birthday I held a small gathering of some of the new friends I’ve made while here on Carriacou. Originally planned as a birthday party, it morphed into my own little thanksgiving and maroon for a few of the many kind & helpful people I’ve met on this rural little slice of real Caribbean life.
I couldn’t be happier and grateful for having met Barbara Ann, Dave & Georgie’s Housekeeper, Cook and Babysitter here at Bayaleau Point Cottages. I was happy to supply the fixin’s for a chiken leg barbeque, but without Barbara Ann’s help with making the list and preparing the food I would have been lost.
That Dave and Georgie have welcomed me so fully and allowed me invite a bunch or folks to their deck for this maroon was yet an additional gift that I’m very grateful for…
Let’s see, who was able to make the scene… Michael & Becca from up Belaire way and Belaire Garden Cottage … Dave, Georgie, Myia & Bella of Bayaleau Point Cottages, Popo, Dave’s longtime friend and worker at the cottages, Barbara Ann & her daughter Olivia, Barbara Ann’s sister and her little girl, Andy, one of Dave’s best Captains for boat trips and groom to be of Evana his Slovac fiance, and Evana’s 3 Slovac girl friends (damn I wish I was better at remembering names), and Stanley, Popo’s son & another of Dave’s handymen.
It was a nice quiet family gathering of visiting, sharing stories and laughs… we had moved things down to the boathouse because it was just too hot on the deck in the earl afternoon. And it was here that we sat and visited and drank and had some wonderfully barbequed chicken leg – thanks to Barbara Ann.
One of the evening’s highlights was a birthday song by Myia, sang in the key of a helium ballon. As evening came and the temperature cooled we moved the festivities back up to the deck for Happy Button Day chocolate cake and ice cream, courtesy of Michael & Becca.
